Mexico City redux

It´s incredibly different being here at 50 compared to being here at 19. Okay, I´m older and the boys don´t whistle at me when I walk by, but it´s more than that, really.
When I was here before, everything was magical, from the rotten garbage on the street to public transportation to the smell of butter spread on a hot tortilla. Now, not so much.
I am enjoying my time here, but it´s a much more pragmatic experience. The bus is interesting, but not enchanting. The city is much cleaner, and not smelly at all.
Mexico City was really a trip. I have spent a fair amount of time there, and it really looked different to me when we went there after Teotihuacan on Sunday. It seemed so much more crowded with people. The traffic was horrible, but that´s to be expected. I saw some familiar landmarks, and places I´d been.
We went to Chapultepec Castle, which is a history museum. Last time I was there (1981!) it was a dusty place with cases of artifacts. Now it´s a modern museum with lots of murals by famous painters and really interesting exhibits that show the growth of Mexico as a country.
I have learned so much more about the history of Mexico on this trip, and it has been worth it. There is more to the story than Cinco de Mayo.

  1. It's so cool that you're experiencing such a WAY different viewpoint. Two really different stages in your life.

Sorry that Mexico City isn't as smelly as you remember. Maybe if you ate some of those chilis...

  2. Mary,

I've just read through all your blogs. It sounds like you're having a great time exploring and learning. Enjoy the rest of your stay. I can't wait to read more about it, and hear about in person when you return.

  3. I saw some photos that [I think] one of your classmates posted. She had a lot of beach and water shots in hers. Yours? Not a one. So, are you going to the beach and swinging at bars and just not taking pictures of it, or do you really have your nose to the grindstone and are only taking in the historical sites? 'Fess up!
