My report

Today we did our reports that we had (sort of) been preparing all week. Mine was on the mexican revolution.
We celebrate 5 de Mayo in the states, when Mexico won its independence from France, but what´s really important is the 20th of November, when the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz ended and the constitution was written. Here in Puebla, the battle began early, on Novembe r18.
I used Laminas to write my report, which are Mexico´s answer to the internet. You buy these sheets that are on all kinds of subjects. They are the size of a placemat, and have pictures on one side and words on the other. They are a great way to learn vocabulary, and it´s fun to see what subjects they actually have in that store!
At any rate, my report went well. I bought a cd of revolutionary songs and we played one afterwards.

The red pod of death

This morning for breakfast, I had pineapple, a big slice, cut up in squares. They eat the core here too, but I figure, what´s a little more fiber??
I also had a little omelet/scrambled egg thing that had bits of ham in it and THE RED POD OF DEATH. I guess because I had been eating a bit of salsa, Lorena thought I was ready for the big leagues, and she put not so little pieces of those dried red pepper seed pods in my eggs. It was good, but it sure cleaned out my sinuses!

This weekend

Tomorrow I get to sleep in, and I plan on doing homework for the day. I have to read a novel that I haven´t started yet by the end of the session. On sunday, we´re going to Teotihuacan, the pyramids of the sun and the moon and all that. Then we´re going in to Mexico City to see a few of the sights. It will be a long day, but I should learn something!

It´s a mystery

I don´t know why I can´t load pictures on to this site... sorry! I´ll keep trying.

Start your own church!

I don´t know if it´s just in Puebla, but downtown is full of stores where you can buy all manner of church things, like statues, monstrances, candlesticks and these magnificant gold crowns. I´m not sure what the crowns are for (not air freshener, surely!) but who knows? I´m not sure who buys this stuff, but it´s interesting. I´m going to check one out more fully to see exactly what´s available. Who knows what I´ll come up with. Perhaps I should consult cousin Michael Patrick first!

Jop searching in mexico

And you think it´s hard to find a job in the states? Here the standard job application includes all sorts of stuff you can´t imagine! You have to list age, weight, height, who lives with you, how much debt you have, and a picture! Want ads are unbelievable. They advertise for age and sex, and how good looking you are. Apparently, it´s very hard to get a job after 40, and there are lots of people working at whatever they can get. There are some unions. In the teachers´union, if you get a place there, you can leave it to your brother or niece, or whomever, regardless of whether or not they are qualified to teach, and they can have the job!
The best paying jobs here are at Volkswagon. This is where they make the beetle, and they made the old one here until a couple of years ago....

Sorry about the posting

The computers here have been acting up, thus, no posting yesterday. Let´s try again.
